{"id":5031,"date":"2026-01-04T20:27:39","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T20:27:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/michaeltomasiniwellness.com\/?p=5031"},"modified":"2026-01-20T20:47:37","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T20:47:37","slug":"wellness-during-holiday-travel-week-01","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michaeltomasiniwellness.com\/en\/wellness-during-holiday-travel-week-01\/","title":{"rendered":"Week 01 (2026-W01): New Year in Transit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong> Keeping Your Center While Everything Moves<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a version of the holidays that looks calm on Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then there\u2019s the real version: suitcases, train platforms, time zones, family logistics, and the emotional whiplash of saying \u201cgoodbye\u201d to one place while trying to be fully present in the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week was the real version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were still in&nbsp;<strong>Japan through January 1st<\/strong>, and then we shifted back to Germany and into family mode: first&nbsp;<strong>back to my brother-in-law\u2019s place in Berlin<\/strong>&nbsp;for a couple of days, then to my&nbsp;<strong>father-in-law\u2019s<\/strong>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<strong>January 3rd<\/strong>, and finally home to&nbsp;<strong>Chemnitz<\/strong>&nbsp;that same night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was a week of transitions \u2014 and transitions are where habits either disappear\u2026 or prove they\u2019re real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Japan until January 1: the \u201clast days\u201d feeling<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The end of a trip is its own emotional season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The early days are excitement and novelty. The middle days are rhythm. And the last days have that \u201chold on, this is ending\u201d feeling\u2014especially when you\u2019re traveling as a family and you can tell everyone is storing memories in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I won\u2019t pretend I was perfectly rested or perfectly structured. But I was aware of something important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you travel, wellness stops being a routine and becomes a&nbsp;<strong>relationship<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A relationship with sleep that\u2019s imperfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A relationship with food that\u2019s unfamiliar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A relationship with movement that might look like walking and exploring instead of training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s not failure. That\u2019s reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>January 1: the pivot from travel to family<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Then came the hardest shift:&nbsp;<strong>leaving Japan and re-entering \u201chome life\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 not directly home, but into family homes, which is its own kind of intensity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Returning from a major trip is rarely restful. It\u2019s a swap:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>from adventure logistics to home logistics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>from \u201cwe\u2019re exploring\u201d to \u201cwe\u2019re coordinating\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>from novelty to re-entry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And because it was&nbsp;<strong>New Year\u2019s<\/strong>, there\u2019s also this invisible pressure to decide what the next year \u201cmeans\u201d immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My honest take: the first days of January are overrated for big decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re better for two things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Recovery<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Resetting your basics<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Berlin for two days: short windows, simple anchors<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We spent two days back in Berlin at my brother-in-law\u2019s place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In weeks like this, people tend to swing between extremes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI\u2019ll do nothing, I\u2019m exhausted.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI\u2019ll fix everything starting now.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Both are understandable. Neither is ideal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What actually works (for me) is choosing&nbsp;<strong>small anchors<\/strong>&nbsp;that don\u2019t require perfect circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anchors like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>getting outside for a walk, even when you don\u2019t feel like it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>drinking water before caffeine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>eating one meal that feels grounding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>going to bed without trying to \u201cwin\u201d the evening<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are not glamorous. But they\u2019re the foundation of consistency\u2014especially during family-heavy stretches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>January 3: one more move \u2014 father-in-law, then home<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 3rd we traveled again: to my father-in-law\u2019s house, and then home to Chemnitz that same night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That last \u201cfinal leg\u201d travel is always the one that tests you. You\u2019re already tired, you\u2019ve already done the heavy lifting, and the finish line is close enough that everything feels slightly annoying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet: that\u2019s the exact moment your system matters most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not a perfect workout plan. Not perfect macros. Not perfect tracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just a calm inner rule like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t need to do everything. I just need to do the basics.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The lesson of the week: consistency is portable<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This week reminded me of something I want every busy professional (and every parent) to hear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You don\u2019t need a perfect routine. You need a portable one.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A portable system is built from behaviors that survive:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>travel days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>family days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>jet lag<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>disrupted meals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>irregular sleep<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the emotional \u201cnoise\u201d of transitions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not dramatic. It\u2019s not motivational-poster material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s what actually keeps you moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tiny experiment for next week (under 2 minutes to start)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I\u2019m using a \u201c3-anchor reset\u201d after travel-heavy weeks:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A short daily walk (even 10 minutes)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water before caffeine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One consistent bedtime trigger (same small routine)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>No heroics.
